I’m sorry I don’t have more interesting news, I just wanted to share that picture.
I finally finished reading Infinite Jest. At nearly 1,000 pages plus extensive footnotes (which I did read), it’s the largest novel I can remember reading (counting The Lord of the Rings as three separate books). It took me over four months, which is pretty sad, but it was well worth it. I don’t know if I understand it all; I don’t know if there’s substantially more to the book than I took away from it, but I enjoyed it from cover to cover.
Making an effort to read more in general, I grabbed some list of someone’s important 100 novels in the last century, or something like that. I think I’ve already misplaced the list, but between a mention on that list and some online blurb I can’t really remember, I’ve decided on Gravity’s Rainbow for my next book. Starting a book on page one with a completely blank slate is different for me, and almost exciting. I don’t think I’ve ever read something that didn’t come with enough of a recommendation (or school requirement) to clue me in to at least the most basic understanding of the plot. I guess I’ll be back in another four months with impressions.
