Comics for 11/15/06
Marvel has a problem staggering their releases, which I guess has something to do with tying everything into a delayed title (Civil War). So, Marvel week:
- 52 #28
- Astonishing X-Men #18
- Cable & Deadpool #34
- Civil War #4
- Iron Man #13
- New Avengers #25
52 #28
52 is covered here.
Astonishing X-Men #18
The biggest problem with Astonishing X-Men’s third arc is that it’s built on events that took place long ago in someone else’s run on a different X-Men title. That you could level that sort of complaint at almost any comic book doesn’t change the fact that I felt a little lost, but Whedon still puts together a fun ride.
Cable & Deadpool #34
What began as a surprisingly interesting pairing between Cable and Deadpool has gotten stale. Cable was a character with a cool background who I felt had long outlived his relevance, so I was surprised how much I enjoyed his presence at all, but I’m losing interest again.
Civil War #4
Civil War deserves its own write-up. For now, I love McNiven’s art, and this silly Civil War isn’t going to change that, so I know I’ve got at least something to look forward to from this series. It’d be nice if the rest of it wasn’t completely unbelievable. And when I say unbelievable, realize that as a comic reader, I’m willing to believe some pretty ridiculous plots.
Iron Man #13
I’m glad they’re at least trying to paint Iron Man sympathetically here in his own title, but the whole stupid premise of Civil War is still ridiculous. I wish I had a better reason to be excited about this comic than “It’s the only one trying to fix something gone horribly wrong.”
New Avengers #25
Another pretty decent Iron Man-related comic this week, but I spent my first read through trying to figure out the wrong parts of the comic. I couldn’t figure out if the man breaking into the Avengers Tower was supposed to be, what, I dunno, a clone of Tony Stark? His twin brother? A friend? I still don’t really know. I guess in the end it wasn’t important, but they did a lousy job with the storytelling to have me confused for so much of the comic.
