Comics for 11/8/06
These are a week late! Writing out of obligation isn’t all it’s cracked up to be; I really need to find something I want to write about. Until then, comics it is.
- 52 #27
- Batman #658
- Eternals #5 (of 6)
- Phonogram #3 (of 6)
- Superman #647
- Wolverine Origins #8
You’ll never guess what I have to say about 52 this week…
52 #27
Batman #658
I don’t know what to make of this. This conclusion feels rushed and poorly explained, and the art echoes that. I had to re-”read” several panels to understand what happened in the next one, and the conclusion still confuses me. This issue is a bit better than the previous couple, but only just. My experience with Morrison is very limited, but I guess now I know what it looks like when he’s off his game.
Eternals #5 (of 6)
It’s pretty, and it’s interesting, but the pacing has been inconsistent throughout this miniseries, with a general trend toward acceleration as we go. A more disciplined shopper would’ve waited for the trade.
Phonogram #3 (of 6)
Confession: I haven’t read this yet. I realized with issue 2 that there’s so much going on I didn’t really understand it unless I went back and read issue 1 again. I’ve decided I’m just going to read them all together once they’re released. I know, I know, I should really just wait and buy the collected trade if that’s my plan, but I really like the writer, Gillen, and want to support this book.
Superman #647
Every Superman title (unless you count Superman/Batman) is firing on all cylinders. I long for the day I can write that about Batman, but anyway, Carlos Pacheco is one of those artists that makes you wonder why half the other “artists” in the industry are still employed. We get a beautifuly rendered look at a bleak future, and warnings of what could be DC’s next Big Dumb Event, but it’s too early to say. Whatever it is, it’s got me hooked to see where it goes, and you should be reading it too.
Wolverine Origins #8
Speaking of wondering why someone has a job, it’s my favorite punching bag, Steve Dillon! You suck! Stop drawing comic books! Boooooo! In the meantime, the plot is all over the place. I thought we were chasing Omega Red, but it turns out we’re just having flashbacks and running into Black Widow, completely dropping the Omega Red angle for at least an issue. Well, whatever. Maybe this will come in handy if I ever decide I want to quit reading comics all together. I’ll look back in a few years and say “Look, you spent money on that? What were you thinking? Get out while you can man!”
